I've used this rig a lot in the last two years of being a ham. Let's just say it's great for nearly everything! It's a great all around rig and can be used for SSB, CW, Digital, and beyond... I've used this radio as my base station (before I got the FT-102), and have used it for mobile. I've even ran it in 5 degrees celsius in high humidity, the thing still worked (don't try that at home please).
Three downsides: One: This model doesn't come with the NR and Auto Notch Filter extension board installed (no notch filter). Second: You cannot get wide or narrow filters (ex: FL-222 for SSB Narrow) anymore. Icom discontinued to make those some time ago. Third: It doesn't cover six meters and doesn't have FM mode capabilities.
I recommend this radio to new hams (like me) and to experienced hams into mobile operations (Examples: POTA & SOTA). Another alternative for mobile operators is the FT-891 if you want something a bit smaller.
All the best!

solid entry level rig
Simple to operate and tons of fun. I'd give it a 5 if it had a cw notch filter in it.
